conference

Animal Conference 2008 at Ramada Inn, Morgantown on November 15th.
These sessions will be offered but I do not have the schedule completed or the session titles confirmed.  Keep checking as this evolves.  We are still working on one for equine abuse since it was another one with the greatest number of request.  Feral cats is another but I am not sure if we will have that this conference.  We will be talking about ordinances at the round table in the morning.  Some areas have cat ordinances and that may be discussed.  This is your chance to learn and ask questions and share ideas.  Make plans to attend!   We are working on getting pay pal on our site but regardless I will have the registration information on by August.

Keynote Session presenter:  'No more chains'
Tammy Grimes founder of Dogs Deserve Better
Tammy started DDB in 2002 to free dogs from the chain that bind and isolate them.   Start changing the way you and your community think about the chaining and penning of dogs today.  You will never see a chained or penned dog again without thinking of how you can help to free them.  See her website for the entire story.

Lobbying 101 session presenter:
Ann Church - Eastern Regional HSUS Coordinator

Eastern Mountain Region (KY, TN, NC, VA, WV)
The Humane Society of the US
402 Maple Avenue West
Vienna, Virginia  22180
Ann was with HSUS from 1981 until 2000, primarily handling state
legislative matters. (Before that she worked in the Ohio state legislature and the U.S.
Senate.) After leaving HSUS, she ran Humane USA Political Action
Committee for a few years before heading down from DC to NC to take
care of my ailing parents. She makes her home both in NC and Northern
Virginia.  The current HSUS goal is to provide improved assistance to local
activists by creating smaller regions with the oversight of a regional
director and place a state director in as many states as possible.
The newly created Eastern Mountain region consists of WV, VA, KY, TN,
and NC.   She has a long history working with HSUS and is enjoying learning more
about the individual states, their concerns and priorities.

West Virginia Law session presenter:

Check out our conferences from 04 and 05 below with pdf files of great presentations available for your viewing.  Adobe reader will be required to view the presentations.  It is a free download online.

The FOHO conference presentations were terrific this year.  Dr. Starcher could not attend but it worked out well since Dr. Appel, DVM who was filling in for Dr. Miller did a wonderfully informative session on "How to perform a basic exam/"   Samantha Mullen from HSUS and Laura Lanza from the ASPCA got high marks on their sessions too.  Maggie Huff from Lollypop Farm and Sandy Swisher of FOHO rounded out our speaker list with extremely informative sessions as shown below.  We are deciding now whether to continue a yearly conference or move to bi-annual.  We also are deciding where to have the next conference.  Locations suggested are Charleston, Pipestem, Morgantown, Flatwoods.  We have had past conferences in Clarksburg, Parkersburg and the Stonewall Resort.

Law and Order for Animals presented by Samantha Mullen, Program Coordinator for the Mid-Atlantic Regional Office of the HSUS.  In this workshop, the types of animal abuse most frequently encountered by humane law enforcement authorities will be reviewed, as well as methods for building strong court cases.  Passive and active forms of abuse both cause enormous suffering on the part of animal victims.  Because passive abuse stems from neglect, it is often more challenging than overt or violent acts of cruelty for prosecutors to address in a court of law.  However, evidence gathering and documentation are similar for all crimes, as will be discussed.  The potential impact of media coverage on the outcome of animal cruelty cases will also be explored.

2) Animal Hoarding: A Community Task Force Approach to Solving Hoarder Situations (Part I) presented by Linda Reider, Regional Coordinator for HSUS’ Great Lakes Office. Virtually every county in West Virginia has at least one animal hoarder. A single hoarder can cause the suffering of hundreds of animals, not to mention the effects on the person herself and the community at large. Yet animal care agencies frequently find such cases very difficult to resolve. This two-part workshop will define animal hoarding, discuss the weaknesses of traditional hoarding case approaches, and give current recommendations. The development and function of a community hoarding task force accompanied by a new HSUS video on this topic; group discussion of experiences; and case studies will enable participants to learn about this important issue in several ways.

3) Where’s the funding? Presented by Aimee St. Arnaud, community programs manager for the central U.S. for Best Friends’ National No More Homeless Pets campaign. Do you have a great idea for a spay/neuter or other program but lack funding? Have you exhausted every fundraiser imaginable, from garage sales to silent auctions? And how can you be sure to get the most out of your hard-raised funds? Money is available – it’s time to get creative and look in new places that you might not traditionally think of as possible funding sources. Aimee will answer your questions and share ideas about how other communities have funded programs in unconventional, innovative ways – one of them is bound to be perfect for your community.
