1) 'Baby's Bill'  (is being introduced this week so a bill number will follow)  will require all dog breeders who sell directly to the publi and sell more than 50 dogs per year to b e federally licensed and requires that dogs at commercial breeding facilities be given exercise each day.

2) Horse Slaughter (H.R. 503/S. 311)
We are working hard to end the suffering endured by more than 100,000 horses each year who are hauled across the country and cruelly slaughtered for human consumption overseas. Tell your congress reps. to end the slaughter of America's horses and prevent their export for slaughter abroad.

3) Dog and Cat Fur Prohibition Enforcement Act (H.R. 891)
Recent HSUS tests showed that animal fur is frequently mislabeled or marked as faux. Tell your congress reps. to stop the sale of fur from raccoon dogs and require that all fur garments be labeled.

4) Downed Animals (H.R. 661/S. 394) Downed animals suffer terribly on their way to slaughter and are at a higher risk of carrying diseases. Tell your congress reps. to end the use in human food of animals too sick or injured to stand or walk on their own, and require that they be immediately and humanely euthanized.

Congress overwhelmingly passed the Farm Bill in May 08 over the veto of President Bush.  It is only the 2nd veto in this President's reign and this bill had key animal protection law within it. Way to go Congress!  Tell your representatives how much you appreciate this!
Overall for animals, it will
stop the import of puppies for commercial sale from foreign puppy mills and strengthen the federal law against animal fighting, as well as to increase penalties for those who violate the Animal Welfare Act (AWA).
Stop foreign puppy mills-All dogs imported into this country for commercial sale must now be 6 months old.
Animal Fighting-it is a crime to knowingly possess or train animals for fighting, enhancing the penalty for animal fighting offenses from a potential three-year prison sentence to a maximum five-year prison sentence, and making any animal fighting affecting interstate or foreign commerce a federal crime.
Increased Penalties for violating AWA
:  Maximum penalties now increased to $10,000 (this does not sound like enough to us but it must have been very low)

Michael Vick sentenced to 23 months for dogfighting charge!!!!!
He has lost endorsements and perhaps his NFL career is over. The NFL has suspended Vick indefinitely!   Shelters in West Virginia see the results of dogs involved in dogfighting.  In talking with local officials dogfighting occurs here just as it does in urban areas.   Thanks to HSUS and PETA for keeping the pressure throughout the media coverage on this topic.  Vick's plight hopefully will make it even tougher on those accused of this horrific activity.  Watch the winning videos on 'You Tube' from the HSUS campaign against dogfighting?   Watch the winning videos by clicking on blue area.   My favorite was 'Ms Paisley Sky.'

Animal Appreciation Day January 31, 2008
Humane Societies and shelters throughout WV were recognized on Jan. 31st, "Animal Appreciation Day"
pdf file of resolution at the House Session of the WV State Legislature.  It was a very impressive day.  Our President, Betty Burkett was introduced on the floor of the House along with long time animal lobbyist and advocate, Sylvia Shafer.  Also Summer Wyatt, Miss West Virginia was included along with HSUS who had representatives in attendance supporting our day.

Miss West Virginia is a great role model!
Summer Wyatt, Miss West Virginia spoke eloquently in support of animals at Animal Appreciation Day.  Her website contains her
platform which is 'Making the Connection, Animal Cruelty and Family Violence'  She is a lovely and capable emissary for the plight of animals within our state.  We want to thank her for caring and choosing this platform, one which we all know to be an important one.  If you see her at an event, thank her for caring!  And tell her how proud we are that she is representing our cause.  Summer Wyatt's website

Animal group from PA helping in West Virginia to make a difference!
They are working on a grass-roots level with county commissioners, the dog warden and humane officer, veterinarians, two dedicated shelter directors, and concerned citizens to start a viable animal rescue and spay and neuter program.   They are located in Doylestown, PA and travel to Clay County to do this amazing work.  You really must visit their website and view their movie links below to see what they are achieving.  Evidence again that a few dedicated people can make a difference.  Also it is a chilling reminder of how much we need to continue the fight to control our pet overpopulation in West Virginia.  And that Clay County is only one example of many counties throughout West Virginia facing the same issues. Our thanks to this dedicated group.  Please visit their website and find out more about how you can help them help us!

Read an article that gives Sylvia Shafer (animal lobbyist)  some much-deserved appreciation!

2007 Our state capitol passes enlightened animal ordinances.

We have included the entire city ordinance here on animal code from Charleston, WV.  Included are the restricted tethering ordinance which is the first of its kind in West Virginia, plus transmitting a dog in a trunk is prohibited or loose in the back of the truck, or left for more than 5 minutes in a car in extreme temperatures.   Applause to the city of Charleston for leading the way with its city ordinance.  Click here to link to the pdf file

If there are other city ordinances out there that are extraordinary animal friendly ones of which we are unaware, please contact us.
